Rebound Hammer Technology

  • Compressive "Rebound" Strength of different materials (concrete, rolled paper, leather, etc…) is routinely measured throughout the world with a Schmidt Rebound Hammer

  • The Schmidt Rebound Hammer is a non-destructive testing device that measures compressive "rebound" strength of different materials using the principle of COR - Coefficient of Restitution (velocity out/velocity in)

  • The Device measures compressive "rebound" strength by comparing the controlled input velocity of a mass with the resulting exit velocity after the mass “bounces” off the plunger in contact with the material being measured (velocity quotient or Q# = RS# or Rebound Strength) – analogous to the bounce of a ball off the bat

Engineered Machine

  • The patented CORTesting (Coefficient of Restitution Testing) Machine has been designed and built with precision to produce a repeatable testing process from bat-to-bat giving accurate, comparable results

  • A proprietary Tool design is integrated with the automatically actuated Rebound Hammer and controller to test the Bat without any affect on the Bat

  • The machine is adaptable to all length and weight wood Bats

  • The Bat is incrementally rotated 4x during the test to get a maximum RS# for each quadrant - with the grain direction and against the grain direction

  • A PC and Label Printer are included to produce a printed Label with the RS# to be applied to the Bat knob on the specific quadrant of the bat that produced the highest RS#

  • The controls and configuration make it easy to operate and move around in a baseball clubhouse environment

Higher Rebound Strength = Higher Exit Velocity

Hundreds of tests have been performed with high quality professional grade bats

Same model bats with different RS#s were used in controlled conditions with results showing bats with a higher RS# produce a higher exit velocity

Application

Testing Procedure

1. A bat is clamped into the Machine in the proper position and radial orientation (with sweet spot and impact surface #1 at test Tool)

2. The Machine start button is pushed and the Rebound Hammer performs 5 tests

3. The Bat is rotated to each quadrant and tested again

4. The test results are downloaded to the PC and the data is statistically analyzed (Average, Std. Deviation, Min. and Max.)

5. A Label with the maximum RS# is printed and attached to the Bat Knob on the specific quadrant with the highest RS#

Bats should be tested at the game site to avoid any effects of differing temperature, humidity, barometric pressure, etc…
